Since accepting a faculty position at Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan, Thomas Linde has been active throughout the world as a pianist, teacher, and musical scholar.
He has performed extensively in Taiwan, Mainland China, the United States, Canada, and Malaysia. Early in his career he was invited by the United States Information Service to perform a recital of 20th-century American piano pieces in Japan. He has since returned to Japan seven times to perform in Tokyo, Kyoto, Utsonomiya, and many other cities. As a teacher, he has served as a visiting professor at Eastern Michigan University and has conducted masterclasses in Taiwan, China, Japan, the United States, the Czech Republic, Italy, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia*. During summers, he has taught at the Prague International Piano Masterclasses, the Prague International Piano Institute, the Amalfi Piano Festival, and the Brancaleoni International Music Festival. He has also served as juror for international piano competitions both in Taiwan and abroad. Professor Linde has taught students who have won first prizes in international and all-Taiwan competitions. Some of his former students have continued their studies at such schools as The Julliard School, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Berlin Hochschule, and Hanover Hochschule. He has former students who now hold full-time faculty positions at established universities in Taiwan, China, and the United States. Professor Linde has also lectured extensively on developing effective piano practice habits throughout Taiwan, in China, Italy, and Malaysia. He has also written articles that have been published for international music conferences, journals and periodicals, and is author of the book, The Stylus Phantasticus in the Keyboard Works of J. S. Bach. Professor Linde has also been active as an administrator. From 1994 to 2011, he was director of the Tunghai International Music Festival. From 2013 to 2019, he was chairman of the Tunghai Music Department. He has also coordinated many music conferences and workshops at Tunghai. Professor Linde earned a Doctorate of Music, Music Literature, and Performance from Indiana University at Bloomington, graduating with distinction. He earned an undergraduate degree in piano performance from Baldwin-Wallace College (now Baldwin Wallace University) and later became a recipient of the Conservatory Alumni Achievement Award. His piano teachers include Stephen Kovacevich, Robert Mayerovitch, Alain Planes, Karen Shaw, and Zadel Skolovsky. He studied chamber music with Josef Gingold and vocal accompaniment with Eugene Bossart. In 2023, Professor Linde retired from the full-time faculty at Tunghai. Shortly before his retirement, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from the university for excellence in teaching and contributions to the music department.
