Pianist Tamás Ungár has earned international acclaim for his powerful performances and imaginative programming. His distinguished career has taken him across the globe, with invitations from major musical centers in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, England, Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan. Among his most notable performances are the Bartók Centenary Recital at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall; appearances as soloist/conductor in Mozart piano concertos at Leeds University; and world premieres with conductor Geoffrey Simon and the Albany Symphony Orchestra—including Barry Conyngham’s “Monuments,” a double concerto for piano, violin, and orchestra, and Lawrence Leonard’s piano concerto version of Pictures at an Exhibition with the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra. He has also been invited for special recitals and master class series at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Recognized as one of the most respected piano teachers in the United States, Tamás Ungár has attracted students from across America and from countries including Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Korea, Hungary, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, the Republic of Georgia, Singapore, Russia, and Taiwan. His students have won prizes in both national and international competitions and performed in leading music centers around the world. Since 1989, he has been a frequent guest teacher at music institutions throughout Europe—including England, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden—and in Asia, where he has taught in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia. From 2006 to 2014, he served as Artistic Director of the Beijing International Piano Festival, and he continues to be Artistic Advisor for the Zhou Guangren Summer Piano Institute. During the summer months, Dr. Ungár has been a sought-after guest faculty member at prestigious international festivals such as the Semper International Music Festival in Schlern (Italy), the Banff Piano Master Classes (Canada), the Hamamatsu Master Classes (Japan), the Tel-Hai Master Classes (Israel), International Master Classes in Katowice and Kielce (Spaces of Culture), the Chopin Festival in Duszniki (Poland), and the Chetham’s International Summer School and Festival in Manchester (England). In 1981, Dr. Ungár founded the PianoTexas International Festival & Academy, where he continues to serve as Artistic Director. Together with Dr. Melody Ouyang, he has built a destination festival that welcomes Young Artists, Teachers, Amateurs, and Juniors, widely recognized as one of the foremost summer piano festivals in the world. His achievements have earned him numerous honors, including the Presidential Scholar Program’s Teacher Recognition Award (2010) and the Music Teachers National Association’s “Teacher of the Year” (2013). In recognition of his lifetime dedication to the fine arts, the Senate of Texas proclaimed him a “Distinguished Citizen.” Dr. Ungár’s most influential teachers include Alexander Sverjensky at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Lajos Hernádi at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and György Sebök at Indiana University, where he earned his Doctorate in Music. Before joining the TCU School of Music in 1978, where he is currently Professor of Music, he taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Purcell School (England), and the University of California, San Diego.
